Most dictation tools send your voice to a server. That buys them big models and cross-device sync, and it costs you a subscription, an account, and a copy of everything you’ve ever said. Talk and Type runs on your Mac’s own Neural Engine. Here’s the honest trade.
We wrote this to help you decide, not to win. If you read it and conclude one of the others suits you better, it did its job — a few of these rows go against us, and we’ve left them in.

Where the others are a better choice
You work across Windows, or want your phone in the loop today
We're Mac only, and Remote Talk — dictating on the iPhone into your Mac — is planned, not shipped. If you need cross-device now, the cloud tools genuinely do that and we don't.
You transcribe recorded files all day
That's coming to Pro in 1.1. If it's your main job today, an app built around file transcription will serve you better right now.
You need to tell speakers apart
Talk and Type on the Mac is built for dictation — getting your own thoughts down — so it doesn't separate speakers, and other tools do that job better today. One of them includes it free. Speaker separation is coming to Talk and Type for iOS, which is built for meetings, but that app hasn't been released yet.
You want the largest possible model
A model running in a data centre can be bigger than anything that fits on a Mac. That's a real advantage, and it's the trade we chose against — because the price of it is your voice leaving the room.
There’s no Privacy Mode, because there’s no other mode.
Privacy toggles exist to make cloud processing less risky — to stop your recordings being kept, or used to train a model. They’re sensible settings, and they matter, because in a cloud tool the data has already arrived.
Nothing here reaches a server, so there is nothing to toggle. We couldn’t train on your voice if we wanted to. It never reaches us. Your dictation is processed by your Mac’s own Neural Engine — there is no request, so there is nothing to discard.
On certifications
SOC 2 and ISO 27001 audit how a company protects the data it holds. We don’t hold any — no server, no account, no retention. Those audits are appropriate and valuable for companies that do hold your data; they’re answering a question our architecture doesn’t raise.
